Sansepolcro, the birthplace of Piero della Francesca has been the subject of several landscape studies. One of these is to be exhibited in the up and coming solo show at the Brian Sinfield Gallery, Burford.
The one seen here, the painter gave to his wife in 2012.

Rose was clearly influenced by this detail of the 'Flagellation' by Piero della Francesca. The painting is one of several works by Rose in which the cook becomes the protagonist for larger issues.

Metaphysical painting including the work of Giorgio DeChirico and Giorgio Morandi had a major affect on Rose's painting from an early age. In the early 1980s Rose visited an exhibition of Morandi's paintings at the San Francisco MOMA. He subsequently wrote a review for 'Concrete Magazine' funded by the College of Environmental Design, Berkeley.
Rose has worked often as a still life painter, and has equally incorporated the metaphysical approach into his other paintings. While teaching at the university of California, Berkeley he gave a seminal lecture on the relationship between the metaphysical school of painters and the architect Aldo Rossi.

Piero della Francesca has been a leading influence on the contemporary painter William Balthazar Rose. Rose moved to Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, Umbria in 1997.  Using the last of his savings he purchased a small flat with spectacular views high in the Tuscan/Umbrian hills. He used this flat to explore the landscape motifs of the area, and aimed to apply some of Piero's geometric skills to the landscape paintings he made. He worked often with the square as a proportion (a modernist tendency) though his approach to the painting was direct and naturalistic.

The painting 'Night' exhibited and later sold by the Brian Sinfield Gallery in Burford was sited by William Balthazar Rose as being a major predecesor for his current set of paintings which are soon to be exhibited at the Sinfield Gallery. It has been rumoured that an important museum in Britain has been interested in acquiring  'Night' or one of similar quality.

William Balthazar Rose started this painting in Italy several years ago. The rich quality of the painting is due to the several layers of paint which have been built up over a long period of time. Rose recently concluded the painting, and it is now on display in Cornwall. There may in fact also be the influence of the St. Ives painters on this work.
